Singapore Communities of Care

West Coast

West Coast was created out of reclaimed land in the 1970s. Despite both being created out of reclaimed land, the east became a recreational area but the west was filled with industries. The western part of West Coast is largely industrial but the eastern and central parts of the area are mostly filled with private housing along with a single HDB estate.

A town centre exists in the heart of the HDB housing estate. It consists of two-storey shophouses on Jalan Mas Puteh, Ayer Rajah Food Centre, Ayer Rajah Market, West Coast Community Centre, West Coast Recreational Centre and the well-known West Coast Market Square. West Coast Plaza (formerly known as Ginza Plaza) lies across the market.

West Coast is well connected with an array of road networks. There are two parallel primary roads which serve West Coast: West Coast Road and West Coast Highway. Ayer Rajah Expressway is located along the northern boundary of Clementi West. Jalan Buroh and Penjuru Road are located towards the western end of West Coast.

There is a wide variety of sports and recreational facilities around West Coast. Clementi Stadium hosts a football field and running track. Squash courts and bowling facilities(West Bowl) can be found at West Coast Recreational Centre. West Coast Park and Clementi Woods Park also hold facilities for cycling and a dog run for pups to play. There are also several fitness corners throughout West Coast.

East Region – Bedok Reservoir

Located in the north of Bedok New Town, Bedok Reservoir Park is popular amongst joggers and water sports enthusiasts in the eastern part of Singapore. A converted sand quarry, the park surrounds the 88-hectare Bedok Reservoir, making it a great place for water activities.

Water sports enthusiasts and adrenaline junkies regularly gather at the park to dragon boat, kayak and wakeboard while anglers cast their rods in hopes of hooking their next big catch. Fitness enthusiasts, schools and organisations conduct regular runs at the park’s 4.3 km track. Alternatively, sit back, relax and enjoy the scenery from the benches that are conveniently placed throughout the park. Visitors can experience a refreshing sense of tranquility at the floating deck, situated near the Activity Lawn event site, which offers a spectacular view of the reservoir.

With more than 14,000 wetland plants added along the reservoir as part of the Active, Beautiful, and Clean (ABC) Waters Programme, Bedok Reservoir Park features a diverse mix of flora and fauna. A great sanctuary for bird watching, nature lovers can spot swallows playing by the water, little herons wading along the banks of the reservoir and kingfishers diving for their lunch.
